“I found the process really useful as it allowed me, other Senior Leaders within the school and colleagues leading specific areas the opportunity to reflect on key aspects of our PSHE curriculum and delivery, hone in on what was needed in our relevant policies, look at how our PE department could have a higher profile and how we as a school could better meet the needs of our students with additional SEMH needs.”

"Completing the School Health Check has been such a valuable and informative exercise for our academy. As curriculum lead, I have been able to explore each element of our PSHE, PE and DT provision and look at the key areas of development. The outcome of the check will be utilised when reviewing and amending our curriculum for the next academic year and will inform future CPD needs for our academy team. Similarly, the check has highlighted areas of strength, particularly in relation to our SEMH provision, which must be recognised and celebrated."

East Sussex Healthy Schools logoThe rationale for taking a ‘Healthy Schools’ approach is clear. Promoting health and wellbeing in schools and colleges can improve both educational and health and wellbeing outcomes (PHE 2014).

The East Sussex Healthy Schools programme builds on previous evidence-based local approaches. It is supported by East Sussex Public Health and the East Sussex School Health Service.

The programme is free to schools in East Sussex and brings together:

  • Healthy Schools Award via the School Health Check. The content is strongly aligned with the latest Ofsted descriptors, providing a simple way to collate a range of evidence around Social Emotional and Mental Health, PSHE, Physical Activity and Healthy Eating.
  • new pupil survey – My Health My School - for years 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and key stage 5 as well as separate surveys for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
  • a new updated PSHE offer from the School Health Service.
